One of the stories not reported (or grossly underreported) on sniping in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is the situation at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi. After the storm hit the base, the security patrols had to repel looters who attempted to enter the base. In the aftermath, there has been a problem of sniping at aircraft on approach to KAFB, and at ground crews on the tarmac as they offload relief supplies and service aircraft. The ground crews have been wearing body armor and are armed. All aircrews inbound to KAFB are instructed to be armed. The USAF has had to move extra force protection assets to the base.

Boy, I keep getting a rosier and rosier picture of the American character these days.
